Elections, Voter Registration & Running for Office

Elections are held between March 20 and April 7 of each year as per the Town Charter.  Look at the Town Announcements and Journal for poll hours for the specific election.  Voting takes place at the Somerset Town Hall.
Registering to Vote

Town residents may register to vote in the annual election up to the date set by the Board of Elections, usually a few days prior to the election. Once set by the council, notices of these dates are posted in the Town Journal and on the web site.
If you are currently registered in Montgomery County, you are eligible to vote in Somerset. If not, you may register at the Town Hall Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by mail. Contact the Town Office at 301-657-3211 or email the clerk-treasurer to receive a registration form by mail.

Running for Election

To run for election you must be a United States Citizen, have been a resident of Somerset for at least 18 months preceding the election date and you must be a qualified voter in the town and the State of Maryland. Candidates for the regular elections must be nominated at a town meeting to be held on a date at least 4 weeks prior to the date set for the municipal election.
Absentee Ballots

All absentee ballots must be returned in the envelopes provided by the town and must be received prior to the close of the polls on election day.  Absentee ballots will be available starting shortly before each annual election.  Call the Town Office, 301-657-3211, to have the ballots mailed or delivered to you, or stop by the office to pick them up between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
