Wednesday, February 28, 2018
Discover the history of black and white in our area. In Somerset and
nearby lived slaves and slave owners before the Civil War. On Wednesday, Feb.
28, from 7:30-9:30 p.m., two Somerset residents will give a talk. Paige Whitley/
Cumberland will outline the origins of the African American River Road
community and how it developed after the Civil War, flourished in the early
twentieth century and then, with intensified commercial development in the
1950s and 1960s, dwindled and disappeared but for the remaining Macedonia
Baptist Church. David Kathan/Dorset will detail the history of the local Moses
Cemetery and answer questions on the cemetery delineation being demanded by
Macedonia Baptist Church and area communities. This research, sponsored by
the Little Falls Watershed Alliance, was published in Fall 2017 by Washington
History, journal of the DC Historical Society.
