Elections, Voter Registration & Running for Office

The 2020 Town of Somerset has been postponed by emergency declaration, and will be held on June 9, 2020. The Election will be held entirely by mail-in ballot. All registered voters will be sent a ballot via US Mail on May 19, 2020.

At a special Town Council meeting on April 15, the Somerset Town Council passed emergency election procedures, recommended by the Town's Board of Elections.

Registering to Vote



Town residents may register to vote in the annual election by May 17, 2020 to receive a ballot.

If you are currently registered in Montgomery County, you are eligible to vote in Somerset. If not, you may register with the Town's Board of Elections. Contact the Town Office at 301-657-3211 or email the clerk-treasurer to receive a registration form by mail.

Running for Election



To run for election you must be a United States Citizen, have been a resident of Somerset for at least 18 months preceding the election date and you must be a qualified voter in the town and the State of Maryland. Candidates for the regular elections must be nominated at the April 6 Town Council Meeting, or by April 29 by petition.

Absentee Ballots

All absentee ballots must be returned in the envelopes provided by the town and must be received prior to the close of the polls on election day.  Absentee ballots will be available starting shortly before each annual election.  Call the Town Office, 301-657-3211, to have the ballots mailed or delivered to you, or stop by the office to pick them up between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
