About Us
We are a small enclave in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Somerset has a long history, dating back to the 1800s when it was primarily farmland. In the past 125+ years, our Town has undergone a significant transformation, both in development and in our residents.
Somerset is represented by a Mayor and five-person elected Town Council who govern the Town, and a small staff, supported by several contractors to ensure the provision of a variety of services to our residents. Our town motto is, “Where people and trees have deep roots and grow strong."
Somerset is known for its park-like setting within an urban area. Somerset Elementary School, the Somerset pool, tennis courts, and Town Hall are centers of activity that contribute to the town’s strong sense of community. Somerset is conveniently located, and within walking distance to Metro’s Red Line and multiple bus stops. The town is just steps from the Capital Crescent Trail. This trail follows an abandoned railroad right of way and extends 11 miles from Georgetown in the District of Columbia to Silver Spring in Montgomery County. The trail, one of 500 rail-to-trail projects in the nation, traverses neighborhoods and parkland and includes stretches along the Potomac River. Bikers, walkers, and serious hikers all enjoy use of the trail.
